A:

There are options for fertility insurance coverage within the international health insurance market. CCW Global is able to work with some of these insurers and understands many of the complexity in relation to fertility and IVF treatment insurance protection.

The most important aspect of this type of insurance to understand when considering a policy is the issue of Pre-Existing Medical Conditions.

Very simply put, a pre-existing medical condition is any condition for which an applicant has received treatment, received a diagnosis, consulted a medical professional, or otherwise been aware prior to the commencement date of the policy.

Pre-Existing medical conditions are generally excluded from coverage under many international health insurance products. However, this exclusion is a guaranteed certainty in relation to IVF and Fertility coverage.

This is to say, should either you of your partner suffer from a fertility issue currently, or if you think you may suffer from a fertility issue, this will likely be considered a pre-existing medical condition and consequently excluded from coverage under the policy.

This is one of the core contradictions of this type of insurance. Due to the heightened costs of plans which cover IVF and Fertility treatments it is only people who require that coverage (because of a fertility condition) who would consider purchasing the policy. However, because of the pre-existing condition issue they are unable to do so!

As such, it is extremely important to ensure that you are confident no current fertility condition exists if you are going to think about purchasing an international maternity insurance policy which includes IVF and Fertility coverage. If there is no concern with a pre-existing condition and you are approved for enrollment on an international maternity insurance plan offering IVF and assisted reproduction protection you will then need to think about the coverage being offered.

Unfortunately, many Assisted Reproduction benefits will max out at US$ 17,000 for the lifetime of the policy.

With the average cost of a single IVF treatment cycle coming in at roughly US$15,000 worldwide, and the simple fact that patients undergoing IVF or Assisted Reproduction treatment will usually need to receive more than a single cycle, it is easy to see that while coverage is possible it may be more burdensome and cumbersome than it is actually worth.

Compounding this issue of unwieldiness of IVF and Assisted Reproduction insurance coverage is the existence of Waiting Periods which are applied to all benefits of this type under international medical insurance plans. Waiting periods which generally span between 18 to 24 months from the start of the plan.

Waiting Periods are a length of time during which you are unable to receive coverage for a specific coverage benefit under the policy – and only treatment you receive after the completion of the waiting period is eligible for reimbursement. It is not possible to backdate claims.

It then follows that if you wished to purchase this type of insurance next year in 2019 that you wouldn’t actually be able to receive any treatment under the plan until 2021 when the waiting period expires. This would ensure that you are adequately covered against IVF and Assisted Reproduction (to the extent that any policy truly offers such coverage and assuming that no pre-existing medical conditions are present in relation to an infertility problem), but only after an extreme wait.

So there you have it, the gist of IVF and Assisted reproductive insurance on international health insurance plans. It’s a boggy and murky subject, and it isn’t actually clear whether the products are worthwhile or if they can really be used, but they do exist and CCW Global is able to answer any additional questions you may have on the subject.
